#6. Kara Walker: My Complement, My Enemy, My Oppressor, My Love
Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City
Walker makes cut black paper silhouettes that she combines into
panoramic wall pieces featuring a cast of antebellum plantation
characters. In her brutally funny pictures, whites and blacks copulate,
defecate, float through the air and suckle one another, all the time
locked in the mutually degrading transactions of master and slave. Her
work is a fearless combination of righteous anger, ruthless clarity and
fierce imagination.
